I have heard that you now must have separate permits when hunting for deer and bear. That is a license for the dog to hunt deer and a separate license for a dog to hunt bear.
I hunt in a camp that we hunt both deer and bear during the deer open season. By law everyone in the camp must possess a valid deer and bear license. I have no issues with that. I know some camps have just a few bear tags in case somebody shoots a bear.
With this new law one must process separate permits for the dog to hunt deer and bear. I have not whether a separate permit is required for a dog to hunt moose.
The idea of the implementation of the need for a dog permit was to assist with the recovery of the dogs that went astray. I frankly believe little of the fees collected for dog permits ever see a recovery program, in addition the costs for the collection of the fees is costing more than the cost of the permit.
Soon they will be imposing a fee for all dog use while hunting. I would sooner see the elimination of the dog fees, a modest raise in the game tag fees.
Remember, the recovery of wounded game, downed game is assisted by the use of a dog. If we eliminate the dogs because of permit fees we loose game. Dogs are as important in finding game before and after the shot. Is this conservation?
